Collective Exhibition for a Single Body

[EN] Collective Exhibition for a Single Body is a project initiated by French curator Pierre Bal-Blanc in the context of documenta 14 in Athens. The present book summarizes his research on how body, language and value intersect. Bal-Blanc extracts gestures and body situations principally from conceptual artworks created in Eastern Europe in the 1970s and 80s. These gestures, which are meant to be interpreted and repeated, are assembled here in a score to be performed, hence blurring the boundaries between visual arts and choreography. The book documents how the score was performed in several public spaces: the low-cost supermarket that has taken over the space that used to host the Generali Foundation in Vienna; and a social service office in Leuven, Belgium (as part of the Playground festival). Collective Exhibition for a Single Body is also a template for a license that could frame how to value a score, a set of gestures.

[FR] Développée dans le cadre de documenta 14 à Athènes, Collective Exhibition for a Single Body synthétise les recherches du curateur français Pierre Bal-Blanc sur les articulations entre le corps, le langage et la valeur. À partir d’un corpus d’œuvres de l’art conceptuel et du Body-Art de l’Europe centrale des années 1970 et 80, Pierre Bal-Blanc propose de tirer une partition de gestes à performer dans différents contextes, aux frontières de l’art et de la danse. Interprétée dans des espaces publics — le supermarché discount qui occupe aujourd’hui l’espace de l’ancienne Generali Foundation à Vienne, ou récemment, un bureau de service social à Leuven en Belgique (dans le cadre du festival Playground) — Collective Exhibition for a Single Body  est aussi un prototype de contrat qui détermine le cadre qui peut régir la valeur d’une partition, d’un geste.
