Artes Visuales. The Latin American Avant-Garde in Print
Artes Visuales: The Latin American Avant-Garde in Print is a publication emerging from sustained research into one of the most influential magazines in Latin American art. The volume brings together essays and interviews by Hunter College MA and MFA students, revisiting Artes Visuales—published by Mexico’s Museo de Arte Moderno between 1973 and 1981 under the direction of Carla Stellweg—as both a publication and a transnational network.
Conceived alongside a 2025 exhibition at Hunter College Art Galleries and as part of the ISLAA Artist Seminar Initiative, the project integrates research, exhibition, and publication into a single platform. Featuring works by artists including Álvaro Barrios, Luis Camnitzer, Anna Bella Geiger, Cildo Meireles, and others, the volume offers a renewed understanding of print culture as a space for experimentation, exchange, and artistic self-determination across Latin America.
