Ibrahim El-Salahi: Prison Notebook

In 1976, after 6 months as a political prisoner in Khartoum’s notorious Kober Prison, the pioneering Sudanese modernist artist Ibrahim El-Salahi created his Prison Notebook. Both a document and an exorcism of his experience behind bars this sketchbook of masterful pen-and-ink drawings and virtuoso prose and poetry in Arabic is made available in English for the first time, with this complete facsimile of the work, accompanied by the translation of text completed by the artist’s commentary. An essay by scholar Salah M. Hassan further contextualizes the work. [publishers’ note]
